Caroline: Describe yourself in one sentence (i.e. the maker of magic): April: I am a deeply grateful mom, wife, friend, daughter, entrepreneur and believer in true beauty. C: She is also the creator of the most magical and transforming product I have ever put on my face and refuse to be without. C: What is your definition of beauty? A: True beauty is a light in your heart that shines through everything you do. C: What is your "skin story" / what prompted you to create your own product? A: I struggled with my skin all my life. Cystic acne and discoloration were my biggest issues. For me, putting oil my face for the first time felt like jumping off a cliff, but it was love at first drop. Creating Vintner’s Daughter took that love for face oils and pushed the boundaries to the very edge on activity and performance. C: I think when you first told me that you used to have cystic acne (and the fact that you almost knew it would work for my "hormonal/anxiety cheek issue"), I fell in love with you. And you were right! Similarly to you, if you had told me 3-4 years ago I'd be cleansing and treating with oils, I'd think you were out of your mind. But of course, Vintner's is so much more than that, which is why so many people are seeing incredible results. C: I tell at least 5 people a day that they need acids and oils. Why is oil so important? A: I’m not sure there is a one size fits all in skincare, but I do believe there is a face oil for everyone. Oils work to hydrate skin differently. Instead of bringing moisture to the skin, oils create a lipid barrier that keeps skin’s own, natural hydration in. C: I'd say oils also rebalance in ways creams, for example, cannot. It all goes back to people with oily skin thinking that they don't need oil-- everyone needs oil, and if you don't implement it somewhere in your routine, your skin is going to be unbalanced and end up creating more oil to balance everything out again (thus more breakouts and all the other issues, it's a cycle). C: Why does the Active Botanical Serum (“ABS”) work so well for acne-prone skin? A: ABS was developed to be my desert island product. The one thing I would never leave home without. Since I have acne-prone skin that can get clogged easily, we developed around this first. We did this by using foundation oils with very small particle size. After applying Vintner’s Daughter you will notice a matte sheen, vs a shiny oily one. We also used ingredients that have natural anti-bacterial and astringent properties. We start with the most nutrient dense plants in the world. These plants infuse our foundation oils with optimal levels of skin balancing and beautifying minerals, vitamins, anti-oxidants and fatty acids. Lastly, we have a strategic selection of essential oils that address post-acne discoloration. Interestingly, many of the same ingredients that we included to address acne, work amazingly well on rosacea prone skin as well! C: This sounds like a romance novel. As I'm also prone to congestion and slightly sensitive, particle size is definitely everything. Certain oils are huge molecules, which of course would not penetrate the skin correctly or deeply enough. Your formulation is why I can use 6 drops and not look like a grease bomb afterwards. Minerals, vitamins, anti-oxidants, fatty acids, essential oils and no additional fragrance. Delicious. C: One of my favorite things about VD is that the ingredients come from all over the world, coming together to make one little magic formulation. Can you say something about this? A: We are committed to making the finest face oil in the world. To do this, you must focus on quality at every step. We begin with our earth, and the men and woman who are farming it. We work with the most conscientious and quality focused farmers in the world. Many of the folks we work with are family farms that have been producing their ingredients for generations using time-honored and ancient methods. While not the fastest or perhaps most efficient way to make a product, it is the only way to make something of truly exceptional quality. We take this a step farther and test every ingredient before it is put into our formula to ensure that it is at the height of its energy/nutritional content. C: This is probably my favorite part of the Vintner's story. I think it says so much that you didn't decide to "dumb down" this product in any way so it could be quickly mass produced and glide into the wholesale world. This is one thing I say about the price--if you think about each of these ingredients, coming from each exceptional family farm (something they've likely been growing for decades) + then think about the work the VD family does to make sure the nutritional content is at its best, it starts to make sense. C: How should one incorporate this into her/his routine? (i.e. NOT with 27 other products) A: I love an easy and effective system. Uncompromising is a word we use a lot to describe Vintner’s Daughter because I don’t believe women should have to compromise anything for great skin. That includes quality, efficacy, and time. With that said, you can guess that using Vintner’s Daughter is a joy and will deliver serious results. Cleanse with a creamy cleanser, tone, apply Vintner’s Daughter using Push/ Press. Walk away. C: When April was first telling me how to start using Vintner's, she said "Cleanse, put on your P50, and then go straight in with it." This is how my evenings have become so simplistic and ritualistic. I tend to "play" / rearrange my products more in the mornings, but at night, it has been Tatcha cleansing oil or May Lindstrom Honey Mud + Biologique Recherche P50 + Vintner's. P50 opens the skin incredibly well for maximum Vintner's absorption. And like the weirdo that I am, I take the push/press/massage session seriously--my eyes are closed, and I'm breathing in the aromatic goodness. It fills the room. I think this is where some people go wrong with using Vintner's. It's not a "glow" serum. Yes, it does make you glow, but it's not meant to be in a line of 4 other serums and mists and creams. You lose so much of the value and potency of the product this way. It is a treatment product, an oil, and a potent serum all in one. C: Do you believe skincare and well-being / self-care are related? A: They are deeply related, and I think one of the first things to go to in times of stress. It is one of the reasons why we created our Push / Press application method. It may only be 30 seconds, but it is a 30 second self-care ritual that can make a big difference both in your skin and general well-being. C: Slowww down. Breathe in the good stuff. I'd love to see what happens to cortisol levels when using VD.

Great interview Caroline. Based on your comments on Instagram and the great results that my facialist has personally had using this product, I already knew that I would purchase this product. This interview just seals the deal. Thanks for asking all the right questions.

How would you incorporate this into a routine that includes retinols? Right now I am using Sunday Riley Luna but will probably be switching to Tazorac when the Luna is finished. Would you use the VD on alternate nights or same night after the retinol?

Hi Janice! I would use this the morning after retinol or the nights you are not using yourretinol. Oils and retinols are fine together, but because Vintner's is a potent treatment product as well, I wouldn't combine the two, as the VD would not be as efficacious.

Thank you for the additional detail. I've been debated a splurge on this product since I first read about it on your Instagram feed. I just received my first bottle and this is day 2 using it. I love how it feels and smells - truly luxurious. My skin is so smooth after just the first use - can't wait to continue. Thank you!
