I get a lot of questions about whether or not I apply SPF daily. Because I am so fair-skinned, I have always been super obsessive about staying out of the sun and protecting my skin. Now, because of my scars, I'm more obsessive about sunscreen than I've ever been. As in, while walking down the streets of SoHo and realizing it's gotten super sunny, I pull out a travel size and reapply in the middle of the road (true story).
Why are they so good? The ingredients, the dedication of the brand, and ultimately, the "non-sunscreen-ness" of the products. This is a brand dedicated to creating the best sunscreen, not a huge skincare brand who decided to make some products with SPF. And just to reiterate, this is not a sponsored post. I've been using MDSS products since last summer, stalk my Instagram if you so wish.
1. Mineral Crème SPF 50. In depth review here. The summary: it's a "naturally derived," mineral based SPF. 1.5% titanium dioxide, 17% zinc oxide, an antioxidant complex + vitamin C. What it actually feels like: a makeup primer that leaves a super smooth, silky finish. Amazing for congestion/acne prone skins, as its more of an SPF product versus an extra source of moisture (does that make sense? The amount of sun protecting ingredients is much, much greater than that of moisturizing ingredients). A little goes a long, long way (Tip: don't overdo it; it'll be super difficult to get off of your skin due to the silicone content). 2. Daily Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30. Of the two, this one feels more like your typical moisturizer. It also smells like a moisturizer and not of sunscreen (as with the majority of their products). Unlike other SPFs on the market, this actually provides you with good moisture in addition to sun protection. If you look at the ingredients list, you'll see things such as aloe extract, caffeine, a host of extracts (such as rose hips, green tea and chamomile), niacinamide (a wonderful cell communicating ingredient), ceramides (building blocks of lipids [fats] in your cell membranes), peptides (building blocks of proteins), and hyaluronic acid (molecule that retains 1000x its weight in water). As I said, more than a sunscreen. Unlike #1, which is mineral based, this one is 3% avobenzone, 5% octisalate, and 2.75% octocrylene. I tried my best to take a picture to show you the different textures. Mineral Crème SPF 50 is on the left, Daily Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30 is on the right.
